PHASE 1: SUNGEI WAY RIVER REHABILIATION PROGRAMME (2007-2014)

Phase 1 focused on river management for Sungei Way. The programme successfully utilised hard and soft approaches in river management, stakeholder empowerment, strong smart partnership, and emphasised community involvement in river basin protection model development. Some notable achievements of the programme are “River within River”, Handbook on river management through community participation, MRCU van, river community at Sg Way, National River Forum, Sg Way Community River Info Centre and W.A.T.E.R. Project Cabin at Pusat Informasi Sungai Penchala.

PHASE 2: SG. KINTA RIVER EDUCATION PROGRAMME (2012-2018) & SG. PENCHALA RIVER EDUCATION PROGRAMME (2015-2018)

Sg. Kinta River Education Programme focused on 3 tributaries namely, Senam River, Buntong River and Kledang River. The programme replicated Urban River rehabilitation Model under Sg. Way. The River Ranger Youth group trained under the programme recognised at both local and national levels. The biggest river carnival organized in 2014 under the programme. Sg. Penchala River Education Programme replicated the urban river management for larger urban river. The key initiatives includes source restoration at Bukit Kiara, Sg. Penchala Open Classroom launched in 2015 together with JLN, and pilot project on waste management at SS2 Food Court with MBPJ. The programme emphasised community participation in river management through many initiatives such as river clean up, river monitoring, nature craft, pollution mapping, recycling programme, and community garden. Overall, 58 communities, 60 education institutions, 9 business communities, and 5 youth organizations engaged throughout Phase 2.

PHASE 3:

i) WATER STEWARDSHIP AGENDA (2018 – 2020)

The Water Stewardship Agenda explores the 6th river that is Selangor River under Phase 3 while maintaining the existing initiatives at Penchala River and Sungei Way River. Water Stewardship Agenda aimed to reduce stress on local water resource and ensure watershed security through hard, soft & HEART approach with outcomes that can be quantified. The main initiatives under phase 3 are water saving thimbles, rainwater harvest system, reforestation through tree planting, claydyke initiatives, river source protection, and river water quality improvement through constructed wetland cell. The initiatives are ongoing.

ii) WATER STEWARDSHIP AGENDA II (2021 – 2023)

The Water Stewardship Agenda ii focused on three rivers, Sg.Way, Penchala River and Selangor River. Penchala River and Sg. Way promoted as a model urban river in an industrial zone through maintain the quality of river and river biodiversity. Mainly, Agenda ii focussed on maintaining river water quality, flood ranger training, maintenance claydyke rehabilitation and awareness on rivers and water source, alternative water systems, watershed health protection.

PHASE 4:

TOWARDS HEALTHY WATERSHED (2024 – 2026)

The W.A.T.E.R. project focuses on Towards Healthy Watersheds involving initiatives related to water conservation and water resources in the Klang River basin (Way River and Penchala River) and Selangor River.
