About Global Environment Centre
Global Environment Centre (GEC) is a Malaysian non-profit organisation (NGO) established in 1998 to address key environmental issues. The Centre is based in Malaysia but supports activities worldwide with 4 main programme areas: Forest and Coastal Programme, River Care Programme, Peatland Programme and the Outreach and Partnership Programme.
The River Care Programme particularly undertakes projects and activities related to water and river management, solid waste management and environmental education. It's mission is to 'Promote the protection, restoration and sustainable use of rivers by enhancing multi-stakeholder participation and knowledge to stimulate local action'.
The key element of this program is promoting community participation in river and water resource protection and sustainable use through the Civic Science approach. GEC works closely with all stakeholders in solid waste management and water and river management, and believes that everyone can contribute.
GEC has undertaken 5 focus areas which relate specifically to the programme, which are:
- Protection and Conservation: Assisting and supporting the protection and conservation of any catchment and clean river
- Restoration: promoting and supporting integrated river basin management and biological restoration
- Education and Awareness: helping the general public to understand the importance of river care for a good and healthy life
- River monitoring: promoting localized river monitoring and ownership among our communities
- Capacity building: empowering local communities and other stakeholders to address river management problems
